The David Steel years, 1976-1988
The David Steel years, 1976-1988
Collection: Liberal Party from Asquith to Ashdown, 1912–1988 Volumes The David Steel years, 1976-1988
These years were heavily shaped by the Labour Party, starting with the Liberal-Labour Pact of 1977. The 1980s saw an Alliance and a merger with the former Labour MPs of the Social Democratic Party. Records from this period reveal how these alliances worked and what happened when they didn't work as intended. 'Internal records on the SDP-Liberal Alliance' include social issues which the parties intended to campaign upon. Papers covering the Alliance provide an unusual level of detail on both parties and their policies. The Alliance records contain this detail because both parties' views were written before joint policies were agreed. Internal records are usually only made after decisions have been made.

We were unable to find any results for your requested terms. Whilst we try our best to extract as much usable and searchable as possible, our primary resource collections have varying levels of available metadata and searchable OCR'd text depending on the nature of the document; please bear this in mind when searching, especially when looking for older resources. We recommend trying the following:
- Try a different combination of terms and queries to try and match your result.
- Use 'themes' or 'subjects' directly in your search query, e.g. "19th century colonial administration Africa" - 'Africa' being the broad subject.
- Use a broader search and use the filters on the left-hand side to refine your results.
